In the year 2025, the number of people living in small homes in the US will increase from 629,000 to 1.35 billion, according to a study by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The growth is largely driven by the arrival of the new, compact, energy-efficient homes, the authors said in their report, which is due to be released in March.
“In the next 30 years, the population of Americans living in homes with a square footage of fewer than 5,000 square feet will nearly double,” the report said.
“The number of Americans who live in homes less than 5 square feet has also been on the rise.”
